De afbeelding van de Vrouwe van alle Volkeren
De afbeelding van Maria als Vrouwe van alle Volkeren is opvallend. Maria wordt afgebeeld met haar handen in een gevend gebaar geopend naar wie de afbeelding bekijkt. Dat is nog niet vreemd of bijzonder. Er zijn vele verschillende afbeeldingen die Maria zo weergeven. Maar waarom is het kruis hier toegevoegd? Waarom staat Maria hier voor het kruis?
Eigenlijk zou je niet moeten zeggen dat Maria voor het kruis staat, maar dat het kruis achter Maria staat: dat gevend, schenkend gebaar van Maria wil namelijk niet zeggen dat Maria iets uit zichzelf geeft. Als we zeggen dat Maria iets geeft, als we erom bidden dat Maria ons iets verleent, staat dat nooit los van het kruis van haar Zoon Jezus Christus, onze enige Verlosser. Hij is onze verlosser en de gever van alle goeds. De afbeelding van de Vrouwe van alle volkeren wil niets ander zeggen dan dat Maria ons niets anders geeft dan wat zij van haar Zoon ontvangt. Wanneer wij Maria eren, mogen we nooit vergeten dat uit het heilbrengende kruis van Jezus Christus alles voortkomt wat we aan Maria vragen.
Ook het beeld van de menigte schapen rond de voeten van Maria en de wereldbol, is een verwijzing naar Jezus Christus. Dat beeld kennen we namelijk uit het Johannes evangelie: “Ik ben de goede herder”, zegt Jezus daar (Jo. 10, 14). Daar spreekt de Heer ook zijn verlangen uit dat het zal worden één kudde, één herder (Jo. 10, 16). Het kruis dat achter Maria staat op de afbeelding van de Vrouwe van alle volkeren, is opnieuw het teken dat de Moeder van de Heer die door haar Zoon onder het kruis ook tot onze moeder is aangesteld (Jo. 19, 27), mensen één maakt en verbindt, maar niet uit eigen kracht. Het is uit de kracht van het kruis van Christus dat zij onze moeder is in de orde van de genade, zoals het tweede Vaticaan concilie zegt (LG 61). “Door haar menigvuldige voorspraak gaat zij voort ons de gaven van het eeuwige heil te bezorgen”(LG 62). Zo werkt zij mee met haar Zoon om alle mensen te verenigen als broeders en zusters: “Fratelli tutti” (Encycliek van paus Franciscus, 3 oktober 2020).
Het is dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat het gebed van de Vrouwe van alle Volkeren niet tot Maria wordt gericht, maar tot Jezus Christus. De heilige Maagd Maria wordt aangeroepen om een voorspreekster te zijn.
Gebed van paus Franciscus
Maria, zie ons aan! Wij staan hier voor u. Gij zijt Moeder, Gij kent onze inspanningen en onze wonden. U, Koningin van de Vrede, lijdt met ons en voor ons, omdat u zo veel van uw kinderen beproefd ziet worden door conflicten, bedroefd door de oorlogen die de wereld verscheuren.
Dit is een donker uur. Dit is een donker uur, Moeder. En in dit donkere uur dompelen we ons onder in uw lichtende ogen en vertrouwen we op uw hart, dat gevoelig is voor onze problemen. Dat is niet zonder zorgen en angsten geweest: hoeveel angst toen er geen plaats was voor Jezus in de herberg, hoeveel angst toen u haastig naar Egypte vluchtte omdat Herodes Hem wilde doden, hoeveel angst toen u Hem in de tempel kwijtraakte! Maar, Moeder, in beproevingen was u moedig, u was moedig: u vertrouwde op God en beantwoordde vrees met zorg, angst met liefde, angst met offerbereidheid. Moeder, u deinsde niet terug, maar op beslissende momenten nam u het initiatief: in allerijl ging u naar Elisabeth, op de bruiloft in Kana verkreeg u het eerste wonder van Jezus, in de Bovenzaal hield u de leerlingen bij elkaar. En toen op Golgotha een zwaard uw ziel doorboorde, verweefde u, Moeder, nederige vrouw, sterke vrouw, de nacht van verdriet met hoop van Pasen.
Nu, Moeder, neem opnieuw het initiatief; neem het voor ons, in deze door conflicten verscheurde en door wapens geteisterde tijden. Richt uw barmhartige blik op de menselijke familie, die de weg van de vrede is kwijtgeraakt, die Kaïn boven Abel heeft verkozen en die, het gevoel van broederschap verloren hebbend, de sfeer van thuis niet meer terugvindt. Wees een voorspraak voor onze wereld in gevaar en onrust. Leer ons het leven te verwelkomen en ervoor te zorgen - elk menselijk leven! - en de waanzin van de oorlog af te wijzen, die de dood zaait en de toekomst tenietdoet.
Maria, vaak bent u naar ons toegekomen om te vragen om gebed en boetedoening. Maar wij, verstrikt in onze eigen noden en afgeleid door zoveel wereldse belangen, zijn doof geweest voor uw uitnodigingen. Maar U, die van ons houdt, wordt ons niet moe, Moeder. Neem ons bij de hand. Neem ons bij de hand en leid ons tot bekering, laat ons God op de eerste plaats zetten. Help ons om de eenheid in de Kerk te bewaren en bewerkers van gemeenschap in de wereld te zijn. Herinner ons aan het belang van onze rol, maak dat wij ons verantwoordelijk voelen voor de vrede, geroepen om te bidden en te aanbidden, voorsprekers te doen en eerherstel te verrichten voor de hele mensheid.
Moeder, alleen kunnen we het niet, zonder uw Zoon kunnen we niets. Maar U brengt ons terug naar Jezus, die onze vrede is. Daarom, Moeder van God en onze Moeder, komen wij tot u, zoeken wij toevlucht in uw onbevlekt Hart. Wij smeken om barmhartigheid, Moeder van Barmhartigheid; om vrede, Koningin van de Vrede! Beweeg de zielen van hen die vast zitten in haat, bekeer hen die conflicten voeden en aanwakkeren. Droog de tranen van de kinderen - in dit uur huilen zij zo veel! -, sta de eenzamen en ouderen bij, steun de gewonden en zieken, bescherm hen die hun vaderland en dierbaren hebben moeten verlaten, troost de ontmoedigden, herstel de hoop.
Wij vertrouwen U ons leven toe, elke vezel van ons wezen, alles wat we hebben en zijn, voor altijd. Wij wijden de Kerk aan u toe, zodat zij, als getuige van de liefde van Jezus voor de wereld, een teken van eendracht, een instrument van vrede kan zijn. Wij wijden onze wereld aan u toe, vooral de landen en regio's die in oorlog zijn.
De gelovige mensen noemen u de dageraad van het heil: Moeder, open spleetjes van licht in de nacht van conflicten. Gij, woonplaats van de Heilige Geest, inspireer wegen van vrede bij de leiders van de naties. Gij, Vrouwe van alle volkeren, verzoen uw kinderen, verleid door het kwaad, verblind door macht en haat. Gij, die ieder nabij bent, verklein onze afstanden. Gij, die medelijden hebt met allen, leer ons voor anderen te zorgen. Gij, die de tederheid van de Heer openbaart, maakt ons tot getuigen van zijn troost. Moeder, Gij, Koningin van de Vrede, stort in onze harten de harmonie van God. Amen.

The image of the Lady of all Nations
The image of Mary as Lady of All Nations is striking. Mary is depicted with her hands opened in a giving gesture to whoever views the image. This is not yet strange or unusual. There are many different images that depict Mary this way. But why has the cross been added here? Why is Mary standing here in front of the cross?
Actually, you shouldn't say that Mary is in front of the cross, but that the cross is behind Mary: for that giving, bestowing gesture of Mary does not mean that Mary is giving something by herself. When we say that Mary gives something, when we pray for Mary to grant us something, it is never separate from her Son Jesus Christ, our only Saviour. He is our Redeemer and the giver of all good. The image of the Lady of All Nations means nothing else than that Mary gives us nothing other than what she receives from her Son. When we honour Mary, we should never forget that from the salvific cross of Jesus Christ comes everything we ask of Mary.
The image of the crowd of sheep around Mary's feet and the globe, too, is a reference to Jesus Christ. Indeed, we know this image from John's gospel: ‘I am the good shepherd’, Jesus says there (Jo 10:14). There the Lord also expresses his desire that it will be one flock, one shepherd (Jo 10:16). The cross that stands behind Mary in the image of the Lady of All Nations is again the sign that the Mother of the Lord who was also made our mother by her Son under the cross (Jo 19, 27), makes people one and unites them, but not by her own power. It is from the power of the cross of Christ that she is our mother in the order of grace, as the Second Vatican Council says (LG 61). ‘By her manifold intercession she goes on to give us the gifts of eternal salvation"(LG 62). Thus she works with her Son to unite all people as brothers and sisters: ‘Fratelli tutti’ (Encyclical of Pope Francis, 3 October 2020).
Not surprisingly, the prayer of the Lady of All Nations is not addressed to Mary, but to Jesus Christ. The Blessed Virgin Mary is invoked to be an intercessor.

Mary, look at us! We stand here before you. You are our Mother, and you know our struggles and our hurts. Queen of Peace, you suffer with us and for us, as you see so many of your children suffering from the conflicts and wars that are tearing our world apart.
This is a dark hour. This is a dark hour, Mother. In this dark hour, we look to you, and in the light of your countenance we entrust ourselves and our problems to your maternal Heart, which knows our anxieties and fears. How great was your concern when there was no place for Jesus at the inn! How great was your fear when you fled in haste to Egypt because Herod sought to kill him! How great was your anguish before you found him in the Temple! Yet, Mother, amid those trials, you showed your strength, you acted boldly: you trusted in God and responded to concern with tender care, to fear with love, to anguish with acceptance. Mother, you did not step back, but at decisive moments you always took initiative: with haste you visited Elizabeth; at the wedding feast of Cana you prompted Jesus’ first miracle; in the Upper Room you kept the disciples united. And when, on Calvary, a sword pierced your heart, Mother, by your humility and strength you kept alive the hope of Easter through the night of sorrow.
Now, Mother, once more take the initiative for us, in these times rent by conflicts and laid waste by the fire of arms. Turn your eyes of mercy towards our human family, which has strayed from the path of peace, preferred Cain to Abel and lost the ability to see each other as brothers and sisters dwelling in a common home. Intercede for our world, in such turmoil and great danger. Teach us to cherish and care for life - each and every human life! - and to repudiate the folly of war, which sows death and eliminates the future.
Mary, how many times have you come, urging prayer and repentance. Yet, caught up in our own needs and distracted by the things of this world, we have turned a deaf ear to your appeal. In your love for us, you never abandon us, Mother. Lead us by the hand. Lead us by the hand and bring us to conversion; help us once again to put God first. Help us to preserve unity in the Church and to be artisans of communion in our world. Make us realize once more the importance of the role we play; strengthen our sense of responsibility for the cause of peace as men and women called to pray, worship, intercede and make reparation for the whole human race.
By ourselves, Mother, we cannot succeed; without your Son, we can do nothing. But you bring us back to Jesus, who is our Peace. Therefore, Mother of God and our Mother, we come before you and we seek refuge in your Immaculate Heart. Mother of mercy, we appeal for mercy! Queen of Peace, we appeal for peace! Touch the hearts of those imprisoned by hatred; convert those who fuel and foment conflict. Dry the tears of children - at this hour, so many are weeping! - be present to those who are elderly and alone; strengthen the wounded and the sick; protect those forced to leave their lands and their loved ones; console the crestfallen; awaken new hope.
To you we entrust and consecrate our lives and every fibre of our being, all that we possess and all that we are, forever. To you we consecrate the Church, so that in her witness to the love of Jesus before the world, she may be a sign of harmony and an instrument of peace. To you we consecrate our world, to you we consecrate especially those countries and regions at war.
Your faithful people call you the dawn of salvation; Mother, grant that glimmers of light may illumine the dark night of conflict. Dwelling-place of the Holy Spirit, inspire the leaders of nations to seek paths of peace. Queen of all peoples, reconcile your children, seduced by evil, blinded by power and hate. You, who are close to all, shorten our distances. You, who have compassion on everyone, teach us to care for one another. You, who reveal the Lord’s tender love, make us witnesses of his consolation and peace. Mother, Queen of Peace, pour forth into our hearts God’s gift of harmony. Amen.

L'immagine della Signora di tutti i Popoli
La rappresentazione di Maria come Signora di tutti i Popoli è sorprendente. Maria è raffigurata con le mani aperte in un gesto di donazione a chiunque guardi l'immagine. Questo non è ancora strano o insolito. Esistono molte immagini diverse che raffigurano Maria in questo modo. Ma perché qui è stata aggiunta la croce? Perché Maria è in piedi davanti alla croce?
In realtà, non si dovrebbe dire che Maria è davanti alla croce, ma che la croce è dietro Maria: perché quel gesto di donazione, di elargizione di Maria non significa che Maria stia dando qualcosa di sua iniziativa. Quando diciamo che Maria dà qualcosa, quando preghiamo perché Maria ci conceda qualcosa, non è mai separato dalla croce di suo Figlio Gesù Cristo, l’unico Redentore. Egli è il nostro redentore e il dispensatore di ogni bene. L'immagine della Signora di tutti i Popoli non significa altro che Maria non ci dà altro che ciò che riceve da suo Figlio. Quando onoriamo Maria, non dobbiamo mai dimenticare che dalla croce salvifica di Gesù Cristo deriva tutto ciò che chiediamo a Maria.
Anche l'immagine della folla di pecore intorno ai piedi di Maria e del globo è un riferimento a Gesù Cristo. Infatti, conosciamo questa immagine dal Vangelo di Giovanni: “Io sono il buon pastore”, dice Gesù (Gv 10,14). Lì il Signore esprime anche il desiderio che ci sia un solo gregge, un solo pastore (Gv 10,16). La croce che sta dietro a Maria nell'immagine della Signora di tutti i Popoli è ancora una volta il segno che la Madre del Signore, che è stata anche resa nostra madre da suo Figlio sotto la croce ( Gv 19, 27), rende le persone una sola e le unisce, ma non con la sua propria forza. È per la forza della croce di Cristo che è nostra madre nell'ordine della grazia, come dice il Concilio Vaticano II (LG 61). “Con la sua molteplice intercessione, ella continua a darci i doni della salvezza eterna” (LG 62). Così lavora con suo Figlio per unire tutti gli uomini come fratelli e sorelle: “Fratelli tutti” (Enciclica di Papa Francesco, 3 ottobre 2020).
Non sorprende che la preghiera della Signora di tutti i Popoli non sia rivolta a Maria, ma a Gesù Cristo. La Beata Vergine Maria è invocata come intercessore.
Preghiera di papa Francesco
Maria, guarda a noi! Siamo qui davanti a te. Tu sei Madre, conosci le nostre fatiche e le nostre ferite. Tu, Regina della pace, soffri con noi e per noi, vedendo tanti tuoi figli provati dai conflitti, angosciati dalle guerre che dilaniano il mondo.
È un’ora buia. Questa è un’ora buia, Madre. E in questa ora buia ci immergiamo nei tuoi occhi luminosi e ci affidiamo al tuo cuore, sensibile ai nostri problemi. Esso non è stato esente da inquietudini e paure: quanta apprensione quando non c’era posto per Gesù nell’alloggio, quanto timore quando di corsa siete fuggiti in Egitto perché Erode voleva ucciderlo, quant’angoscia quando l’avete smarrito nel tempio! Ma, Madre, tu nelle prove sei stata coraggiosa, sei stata audace: hai confidato in Dio e hai risposto all’apprensione con la cura, al timore con l’amore, all’angoscia con l’offerta. Madre, non ti sei tirata indietro, ma nei momenti decisivi hai preso l’iniziativa: in fretta sei andata da Elisabetta, alle nozze di Cana hai ottenuto da Gesù il primo miracolo, nel Cenacolo hai tenuto i discepoli uniti. E quando sul Calvario una spada ti ha trapassato l’anima, tu, Madre, donna umile, donna forte, hai tessuto di speranza pasquale la notte del dolore.
Ora, Madre, prendi ancora una volta l’iniziativa; prendila per noi, in questi tempi lacerati dai conflitti e devastati dalle armi. Volgi il tuo sguardo di misericordia sulla famiglia umana, che ha smarrito la via della pace, che ha preferito Caino ad Abele e, perdendo il senso della fraternità, non ritrova l’atmosfera di casa. Intercedi per il nostro mondo in pericolo e in subbuglio. Insegnaci ad accogliere e a curare la vita - ogni vita umana! - e a ripudiare la follia della guerra, che semina morte e cancella il futuro.
Maria, tante volte tu sei venuta incontro, chiedendo preghiera e penitenza. Noi, però, presi dai nostri bisogni e distratti da tanti interessi mondani, siamo stati sordi ai tuoi inviti. Ma tu, che ci ami, non ti stanchi di noi, Madre. Prendici per mano. Prendici per mano e guidaci alla conversione, fa’ che rimettiamo Dio al primo posto. Aiutaci a custodire l’unità nella Chiesa e ad essere artigiani di comunione nel mondo. Richiamaci all’importanza del nostro ruolo, facci sentire responsabili per la pace, chiamati a pregare e ad adorare, a intercedere e a riparare per l’intero genere umano.
Madre, da soli non ce la facciamo, senza il tuo Figlio non possiamo fare nulla. Ma tu ci riporti a Gesù, che è la nostra pace. Perciò, Madre di Dio e nostra, noi veniamo a te, cerchiamo rifugio nel tuo Cuore immacolato. Invochiamo misericordia, Madre di misericordia; pace, Regina della pace! Scuoti l’animo di chi è intrappolato dall’odio, converti chi alimenta e fomenta conflitti. Asciuga le lacrime dei bambini - in quest’ora piangono tanto! -, assisti chi è solo e anziano, sostieni i feriti e gli ammalati, proteggi chi ha dovuto lasciare la propria terra e gli affetti più cari, consola gli sfiduciati, ridesta la speranza.
Ti affidiamo e consacriamo le nostre vite, ogni fibra del nostro essere, quello che abbiamo e siamo, per sempre. Ti consacriamo la Chiesa perché, testimoniando al mondo l’amore di Gesù, sia segno di concordia, sia strumento di pace. Ti consacriamo il nostro mondo, specialmente ti consacriamo i Paesi e le regioni in guerra.
Il popolo fedele ti chiama aurora della salvezza: Madre, apri spiragli di luce nella notte dei conflitti. Tu, dimora dello Spirito Santo, ispira vie di pace ai responsabili delle nazioni. Tu, Signora di tutti i popoli, riconcilia i tuoi figli, sedotti dal male, accecati dal potere e dall’odio. Tu, che a ciascuno sei vicina, accorcia le nostre distanze. Tu, che di tutti hai compassione, insegnaci a prenderci cura degli altri. Tu, che riveli la tenerezza del Signore, rendici testimoni della sua consolazione. Madre, Tu, Regina della pace, riversa nei cuori l’armonia di Dio. Amen.
