Bedevaart naar Rome
750 jaar stad Amsterdam
Donderdagochtend 2 mei vertrok een groep pelgrims uit Amsterdam naar Rome, waar ze de doden herdenken, de bevrijdingsdag vieren en bijzondere aandacht vragen voor meer verbondenheid onder alle mensen: ‘Fratelli tutti’, we zijn allemaal broeders en zusters.
Diga maris
Uit de Sint Nicolaas basiliek van Amsterdam reist het koor ‘Diga Maris’ mee. Behalve de deken van Amsterdam zal ook de deken van Amstelland aanwezig zijn. De leden van de zanggroep Diga Maris zullen een concert geven voor gasten in de Friezenkerk op de vooravond van 4 mei. De Vaticaanse minister van buitenlandse zaken, aartsbisschop Paul Gallagher zal er spreken en natuurlijk zal onze ambassadeur H. Exc. mw. Annemieke Ruigrok, aanwezig zijn met wier medewerking deze bijzondere avond is georganiseerd.
Fratelli tutti
Op 4 mei is er een bijzondere audiëntie bij paus Franciscus met een groep van ongeveer vijftig personen, onder wie oud-minister Ed Nijpels en oud-Europarlementariër mw. Maria Martens, die ook bij de Frienzenkerk betrokken zijn. Bij die gelegenheid wordt een nieuw tulpenras aan de paus aangeboden dat de naam van diens laatste Encycliek ‘Fratelli tutti’ zal dragen. Bloemen en bollen voor de Vaticaanse tuinen zullen worden overhandigd door de heer Paul Russel, voorzitter van de Amsterdamse stichting KSBW. Op deze 4 mei dag waarop er ook weer dreiging is van haat en geweld, willen we de noodzaak van de broederschap van alle mensen onderstrepen. Die oproep zal op verschillende momenten van ons bezoek klinken.
Jubileum Amsterdam
Het bezoek wil ook een inleiding zijn op het 750-jarig bestaan van Amsterdam. De geschiedenis van de stad, nu één van de meest internationale van de hele wereld, is verbonden met de katholieke kerk, die onder meer land en stadsrechten schonk.
Eucharistievieringen
Zaterdagmiddag om 17.00 uur viert Mgr. Hendriks de heilige Mis in de Sint Pietersbasiliek (in het Italiaans) met zang van ons Amsterdamse koor. De volgende ochtend vieren we de Eucharistie in de Friezenkerk opnieuw met zang van Diga Maris. Ook bij die gelegenheden zal aandacht worden besteed aan broederschap en vriendschap, aan vrede en aan de slachtoffers die voor de vrijheid vielen.

Dear brothers and sisters!
I offer a warm welcome to your pilgrimage group from Amsterdam. I greet Bishop Hendriks, Mr Ed Nijpels, the members of the Catholic Foundation for the Promotion of Welfare Work in Amsterdam, the Russell family, the Rector and Choir of Saint Nicholas Basilica and each of one of you individually.
The reason for your visit is the 750th anniversary of the City of Amsterdam, the celebration of which will begin this year. The founding and growth of Amsterdam are linked to our faith and the Catholic Church. A key moment in the city’s history is the Eucharistic miracle that took place in 1345 and is still commemorated today by a silent procession and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
Modern Amsterdam is a city where many persons serve the poor and migrants, cooperating with the work of the Sisters of Mother Teresa, the Church’s pastoral outreach to drug addicts, the Sant’ Egidio community and a variety of other initiatives.
Your city is also home to people of many different nationalities, called to live together as brothers and sisters. Its churches, in particular, are places where people from all social and cultural backgrounds can come together. I thank you most heartily for your commitment to making this happen!
It is my hope that you will continue to live and work in your magnificent city with God’s blessing, and that, inspired and sustained by the Eucharist, you will keep bearing joyful witness to our faith and to practical love of our neighbour. May your efforts to promote fraternity and solidarity among the people of Amsterdam bear abundant fruit.
I ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of all, to strengthen you in faith, hope and charity. I bless you most cordially and I accompany you with my best wishes. And I ask you, please, to pray for me. Thank you!
